My mother and I were going to WestTowne Mall, Middleton, Oct 1973, for the second time in two weeks. The first week we had joked about looking for UFOs because a couple of weeks earlier my sister had seen UFOs on her way back from Madison along Highway 12. We didn't see anything the first week. The second week we had forgotten all about UFOs, looking for them, etc. We were driving along Hwy 12, headed toward Madison, south of Sauk City, just before County KP. It was probably about 6:30pm, as we were to be at Sears at 7:00pm for a class. We saw in the sky, coming in over a field on the north side of 12 what looked like headlights of a plane. I asked Mom if she knew of any airports/airfields out this far, she said none that she knew of. While we discussed this, this object came low over the field. As we got to a farm along the highway, north side of 12 just past Bruenig Road, (Ganser or Gasner farm?-brown stone farmhouse), this UFO stopped and hovered over the road and we drove under it. It was just above telephone pole height. It was that close and was totally silent. We couldn't see the shape of this object. We could only guess at the shape from where the lights were. There were four bright white lights, two on the left, two on the right, that went off and on at the same time. Between these two sets of lights was one red light that stayed on all the time. When the white lights were on, it was too bright to see the shape, when they were off, it was too dark. These lights were in a straight line from left to right. This object looked to be wider that the highway. There were other vehicles on the road in front of us and behind us, but nobody stopped, including us.
