Details of Incident:
Late July or early August of 1978 I was on Coast Guard boat 41379 out of Bayfield Wisconsin along
with the coxwain and an engineer. We were out in the islands looking for an overdue boat or
something. I was in the cabin along with the coxwain when the engineer came in and tapped me on
the shoulder and told me to come outside. It was calm, clear and many stars were visible. He
pointed up in the sky and said "Whats that?" A long distance to the North, over Devil's Island
there was an object moving what appeared to be vertically but was really South to North (not a
normal course for satellites) In comparison to an airborne commercial aircraft it was moving
extremely fast. I would guess thousands of MPH assuming the commercial craft was flying about 500
MPH.
Looking at the object through binoculars it was yellowish, roundish and had three brighter orange
dots inside of it (like a three yolked egg). We called this to the attention of the coxwain and
he stopped the boat to observe it himself. We did report this sighting over the radio at the time
that it happened. While we were watching this a couple of other similar objects appeared. We
noticed that they were capable of turning at near right angles at very quick speeds, far faster
than an airplane could. We used "fast-talk" to communicate with the district headquarters in
Cleveland (the first time I had ever seen this used). I recall being told that several other
Coast Guard units had also seen UFO's on this same evening.
When we returned to Bayfield, we prepared a detailed report and sent it via teletype to Coast
Guard Group Duluth and Coast Guard District Nine in Cleveland, OH. We were told to not say
anything to anybody. A day or two later, I wanted to look at the report and it had been removed
from the board where we kept them. The station log was also removed (but this was normal, on a
regular schedule, the log would be taken and transcribed and this could explain this disappearance)
Another thing that I recall about this incident is that the Canadian Air Force had scrambled jets
in response to a bogey that appeared on radar. They did not find anything and the bogey
disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared. I do not know for sure if this was related but I
have no problem at all believing that what we were seeing could have been in Canadian air-space.
