Strange lights, craft seen near Bay City Saturday night

A close encounter with a fast moving, brightly lighted aircraft of some sort left a Bay City teenager and her friend frightened and questioning just what it was they witnessed Saturday night.

The 17-year-old girl, who asked her name be kept confidential, said a large object with two bright white lights on one end and a flashing red light on the other hovered directly over her vehicle before disappearing, about 10:30 p.m.

"It was about 20 feet above me with two lights right next to each other. We didn't hear anything so we know it wasn't an airplane or a helicopter," the girl said.

The girl first noticed the object high in the sky in the direction of Plum City or Elmwood shortly after she picked up a friend outside Bay City. Intrigued by the sight, they drove toward it to try and identify the object. But when it started moving her direction, the girl said she turned the car around and headed back toward Bay City. Within moments, it was hovering about 20 feet above the speeding car, she said.

Frightened, the girls tried to ignore the object and headed for Red Wing. Upon returning home, one told her mother about the sighting. The woman called the Herald Monday to ask whether anyone else had reported a similar occurrence Saturday night.

"She's a B-student - really with it," the woman said of her daughter. "She does not tell stories like this."

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department didn't receive any reports of sightings or similar events over the weekend, a dispatcher said Monday.
