Details of Incident:
I was at a friend's apartment on the west side of Madison WI on March 23rd of 2003 (last night).
I recently purchased a pair of 16X70 binoculars for stargazing and terrestrial viewing. The sky
was finally clear for a couple nights after days of clouds and I wanted my friend to check out
Jupiter. We went out his patio door and my friend was attempting to look at Jupiter through my
binoculars. I was talking about how I could see Saturn earlier in the evening when I suddenly
saw six dim reddish lights in a "V" formation moving slowly from the south. Three on one side
and three on the other. I said to my friend "What the hell is that?!!" He started to say
"That's an airpla..." when he realized that there was absolutely no sound, the lights were not
flashing and it was way to close and large to be an airplane with no sound. I would guess that
if I held my hand out at arm's length it would appear to be just smaller than my hand. I
grabbed my binocs from him to take a closer look and I couldn't see it in my binocs at all. I
took the binocs away from my eyes and said "Where the hell did it go?!?!!" he pointed to it
but I couldn't see it anymore and then he told me that it had disappeared. He must have gotten
a slightly better look at it than I did. He said it never changed pace or direction. At first
we both decided that it must have been a flock of birds reflecting red light from the city. I
think we were both eager to write it off with a simple explanation. After we talked about it we
agreed that the speed and formation of the dim reddish lights were perfect the whole time and
most likely rectangular shaped. I have seen birds flying in formation at night before and this
did not look anything like that. I seem to remember hearing the sound of a woman screaming
somewhere nearby just after I said "What the hell is that?!!". Maybe someone else in the
apartment complex saw it and freaked out? I did a search on the Internet to see if anyone else
has seen anything similar to this today and I found an article about the possibility of a
secret Military "Stealth Blimp" that could match the description. I looked at a drawing taken
from Popular Mechanics Magazine of what this secret aircraft could possibly look like and it's
amazingly close to what we saw. There is a military airbase near Madison so...maybe it was some
kind of secret aircraft. I am going to talk to my friend about it more tonight, keep my eyes
on the skies and a camera nearby.
Additional information received via email from this witness on 7/27/03:
This is just additional information about the original report I already filed the day after the
sighting. I was talking to my friend who saw the object with me shortly after my original report.
He mentioned that at one point he thought he could see stars through the object. I then
remembered that I actually saw what appeared to be twinkling stars on the underbelly of the
object for about a second. This object was low on the horizon and behind it, the sky was hazy
and there were NO stars visable. I even said to my friend "They are trying to TRICK US!!" I
went back to the article I had found online about the "STEALTH BLIMP" and it said that this
aircraft/spacecraft was capable of producing a fake starfield on it's underbelly to hide
itself from view. I am now 100% CONVINCED that what I saw that night WAS the "STEALTH BLIMP".
