Details of Incident:
My girlfriend (J) and I were sitting on the shore of Lake Mendota
right next to the UW's Union center(down by where they keep some sailboat
equipment). We had just watched a very high flying jet go directly overhead
leaving a long contrail behind it. The wind was pushing the contrail out over
the lake (which I believe would be a northerly direction). J spotted the object
first and pointed it out to me. It appeared out of the remains of the contrail,
almost directly overhead us.
The object was a small round sphere, about the same size and luminosity of the
star Sirius on a good night. J thought the object was white and she saw some
sort of heat distortion around the thing. All I could make out is that is was
glittering; it was definately either producing its own blue and white lights, or
reflecting the sunlight as if it were made of chrome. (Though I did not see any
red light on it - just shades of cooler colors).
The object very slowly moved south. It moved in a straight line about the
distance of three handspans (at the end of my arm, I apologize for the medieval
measurements) until it was about 4 handspans from the sun, which was immediately
to the right. Then it stopped. It remained in this position for maybe 10
minutes. At this time I tried calling some friends to have them check this thing
out - but I could not reach anyone. They are going to get some wacky answering
machine messages though...
There was one other person down on the shore who attempted to take a look at
what we were gawking at, but she was too busy fussing with her little baby to
see the object.
Eventually the sphere either receeded - gained altitude, or dissappeared into
some cloud cover- I unfortunately lost track of it while trying to dial the
phone.
To my frustration, J now believes this object to have been a balloon.
Maybe it was.
A huge, highly reflective balloon that moves in straight lines against the wind
and then hovers in place. Maybe.
I do know that there is no chance at all this was a meteor or that this was
another jet. There is no chance of this being swamp gas or atmospheric lensing
or fireworks or a figment of my imagination.
I don't know what it was, but I hope someone else saw this thing over Madison
today and can confirm, at least, that they don't think its a balloon either.
Further details:
I think this object was as high as the contrails of the jet - unfortunately a
quick web search has revealed no information as to how high up those contrails
are...
It made no sound.
I have never claimed to have seen a UFO before.
I am not generally considered nuts by my friends and coworkers.
I hadn't been drinking, and have a college education, for what it is worth.
