I was driving east on Good Hope Road at 9:03 pm when I first saw 3 strange lights in the sky straight ahead. The first, on the left, was smallest. To the right and slightly up was another, brighter light. The third and largest light was farther to the right and positioned higher in the sky, forming a graduated curve. I thought they could be bright stars or planets, but it was too overcast for any stars to appear. I also thought they could be planes or helicopters, but they had none of the usual blinking lights and the movement was wrong. The two smaller lights appeared round, but the larger light was flattened and elongated in shape. The largest light stayed with the other 2 initially, then headed south at approximately the same speed that an airplane flies. (I admit, this could be my imagination running away with me...it COULD have been aircraft.) The smallest light stayed where it was as the middle, medium-sized light curved slowly down around the small light then curved upwards. I heard no sound, but it was too distant for me to have heard it on a busy street.
I drove east on Good Hope past the Port Washington Road intersection and pulled over to continue observing the phenomenon as they moved. The smaller two lights seemed to be staying in that area, so I continued home, heading south on Port Washington in an attempt to spot the third object, which had left my field of vision. I watched it continue slowly south, and from my perspective it appeared round like the others.
I turned off of Port Washington and went east on Capitol, but could not see the objects.
This happened just a couple of hours ago. I was not intoxicated in any way, unless you consider a huge Father's Day meal. :)
My mother left approximately half an hour after I did, and she also took eastbound Good Hope Road home. She saw the lights also, but only the two smaller ones.
It would be interesting to hear other accounts of this same phenomenon.
