My husband and I were returning from Nashville, TN enroute for SW Wisconsin on Sunday, Aug 18, 2002. (We are both private pilots.)
We were flying an IFR flight plan and had been at 12,000 feet most of the trip because of clouds. The Chicago Flight Center cleared
us to descend from 12,000 to 5,000 feet. During the descent of 500 feet per minute at around 140 knots I looked back behind the
right wing and saw a white light between the cloud banks and far in the distance. It appeared to me as a landing light on a plane.
I would say when I first saw it it was five or more miles away. It was coming almost parallel to us but at a slight angle towards
us. Within a few seconds I could see it was getting closer at a great rate of speed. As it was the closest to us approx 1,500 to
2,000 feet) I could see the bright white light was all it was. There were no wingtip or tail lights--there were not wings or
body. In fact, as the light descended rapidly next to us it was still a white light from the back. This all happened in a matter
of 5 to 6 seconds from beginning to end. I felt it was on a collision course with us as we were descending into same cloud it had
disappeared into. This happened at approx 9,300 feet of altitude 20 to 25 miles south of Dubuque, Iowa.
The ATC did not call us with info on another plane in our vicinity. We did not hear any other pilots speaking on the radio
anywhere. A plane would not normally have on it's landing light at 9,000 feet. The speed and the path of it's descent is not
possible by any aircraft I am aware of. It had to travel 5 or 6 miles in a matter of 5 or 6 seconds. That's one mile a second. I
do not think this was another plane. I am not sure what a meteorite would look like, however I do not think it could travel in a
level path and then dive--there were no other sparks of light around it.
I would be interested in knowing if anyone else saw a bright circular white light on that night, somewhere south of
Dubuque, Iowa or in SW Wisconsin on that night.
