Details of Incident:
This is what we saw.
On the evening of August 2, 2001 I was traveling to northern Wisconsin with a friend for a weekend at
my cabin fishing. We were about 3-4 miles south of Mercer WI traveling North on US 51.
At about 00:30 on the 3rd, 3 large bright Yellow-orange lights appeared in the sky directly
ahead of us at a distance of about 1 mile and about a quarter mile above the ground. They were
about the size of your thumb nail when you extend your arm out in front of you. In comparison, it was
a full moon night with the moon over my left shoulder as we drove and the lights were just slightly
smaller in size than the moon. The lights almost looked like yellow orange fireballs but didn't
flicker at all and the outside edges had a blurry or hazy appearance. The lights were "stacked"
directly above each other and appeared to be about 100 yards apart from each other.
We both saw the lights at the same time as if someone switched on a light. We continued on US 51
towards the lights trying to figure out what they were, as we got nearer to them within about a
half mile, I pulled to the side of the road to get my camera from the trunk. As soon as we pulled
over the lights moved straight up about another quarter mile and the spacing between them approximately
doubled. As we exited the car the lights immediately moved from in front of us to our left about a
half mile all with out changing their formation and stopped above the trees and an area of the shore
of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage. The sky had no clouds and as usual was quite clear and full of white
stars that contrasted with the color of the lights we were watching.
As soon as I took the first picture with the flash turned on, the lights converged towards the
middle light and formed a perfect triangle on a horizontal plane. The distance the between each
other was somewhere around 200 yards. I took about 5 or 6 pictures in a span of 5 minutes as we
watched the lights. There was no noise from the sky or the ground, it was extremely quiet. We then
decide to move further down the highway to see if we could get a better vantage point to watch from.
I should mention that as we returned to the car, my hunting dog who was in the back of the car was
sitting quite still. Which for this dog is very unusual, as when I usually stop the car she gets hyper
and can't wait to get out usually jumping into the front seat as I get out. We drove about a about
mile further down the road never losing sight of the lights. when we came to a spot where the trees
were a little further from the road. At this time I reached out of the car with the camera and
snapped another picture. A second later a pickup truck swerved to the side of the road sending gravel
flying. (this was the first vehicle we had seen since we spotted the lights) seeing no other cars I
pulled out and along side the truck at which time the driver of the truck about 25-27 years old said
to us "What the hell am I looking at? I've been watching those lights for about 10 minutes and when I
saw your flash I knew you guys saw them too. This was really wierding me out!". The three of us
watched for about another minute and then the lights began to rise upward very slowly. All still in
the triangle formation with no noise and at a distance of about a half mile from us. As they got
higher the rate increased, when the lights reached an altitude of about 1 mile it was as if someone
turned off a switch, they simply disappeared.
We drove into Mercer and as we entered the town we realized that the town had been blacked out, no
power and a few bars had candles going. When we reached our cabin North of town we had no power until
it was restored at about 01:30 or so. I contacted the power company the following Monday to inquire as
to the cause of the outage and was told it was a "regulator reset"??
